A Reason to Crash

It’s one of the more unique aspects of riding wake that crashing is the best way to get something better than you otherwise would from the situation. First rollers are soo much fun but if your riding what is normally considered well and not crashing a lot, you pretty much miss out. In Almost any other sport there is no fun in dragging yourself back up after you fall Riley Bathurst taking full advantage of falling, first roller back one, shot by Angus Gray.

Just the Right Amount of Dirty

Scotty G has been at the front of NZ wake for a good few years now and with his twin bro Andy they have this new project show casing the riding from the Sunny Coast cable. Just the Right Amount of Dirty. This is one of the first edit’s they have out and includes one of the rare N-bombs a nuclear half cab to revert 3, which just happens to be one of my favourite tricks to watch Scotty do.

Boards & BBQ’s and Grommie camp.

Waitangi Weekend was an eventful one for myself and many of the Wakeboarders in Nz.. Starting it off with the Boards and BBQ’s comp on Saturday, put on my the Haakmas. It was an Awesome event with several newcomers to the competitive wake scene. Highlight of the day was definitely Regan Carlyon’s First round ride, where he stomped two huge passes without falling, loads of stylish inverts and spins along with his first ever scarecrow as his wildcard trick at the end.

Return to the Church

The first time Cam Stenning and myself have ventured back into Christchurch since the whole place down here changed, we used to skate together all the time, usually just out in the rivers or estuary. This time it was a week or winching, some old spots and some new with at least a few more we want to go hit next time. Flipbook by Riley Bathurst.

Winchfest – The full write up.

Around a dusty corner of a farm road and I have to stop the car, looking down into the valley and I’m standing above a monster about to wake up and start destroying more than a few people conception of what wakeboarding in New Zealand is. Three pools with a fairly ridiculous drop between and large amount of ways things can go wrong for anyone riding the set up.

There are still a few tractors pulling the final pieces around and a bunch of on hand friends to get the work done, I’m there as a photographer but as soon as I see this place I know that I’m interested in riding it as much as can, it’s almost a playstation level, the Wakepark two point cable hangs above silently, we spend most of the first day just helping out and putting the final touches on before anyone takes to the water.

2012 Mastercraft Boards and BBQ’s Comp

The Mastercraft Boards n’BBQ’s Groms Wakeboard Competition 2012 was a really good comp to happen down in Magakino yesterday, all about pushing the sport and the level of riding to the younger slayers out there. With the divisions divided up by riding ability it keeps the competition close, Regan “Reggie” Carlyon absolutely killed it and took out the open division with one of the most impressive double stand up passes I have seen from some one young. After the 3/4 bouy on the second pass, competitors were encouraged to try something new or recently learnt, something not normally encouraged in a comp where Reggie stomped his first ever scarecrow, not just in comp but ever, check his face right after, the same feat that earned Jonny Weatherly Wild Card best trick.
A massive thanks to everyone that helped with the event and progressing the sport.
Words and photos, Riley Bathurst.
