Over the last month or so I have really been getting into Instagram. For those of you who do not know what it is, its kinda like Twitter but for photos…

If you don’t know what Twitter is, you should crawl out of the rock you have been living under.

Here are some of the photos I have posted on my Instagram in the last couple of months…

Auckland Wakeboard Open

2012 Auckland Wakeboard Open

The 2012 Auckland Wakeboard Open brought together the local wakeboarders to battle it out for the first ever Auckland Wakeboard Open held at the Orakei Basin in central Auckland.

There was demand from the wakeboarding  community to host a wakeboarding event within Auckland early on in the season to try and promote the sport to the local community and to encourage growth in wakeboarding by making the sport look attractive to onlookers.

The competition was held on Saturday 21st January and towed by a super air nautique that WNZ hired for the day. Original concerns about the size of the wake were soon put aside as Jamie Barrow had the Super Air Nautique weighted just right for a pumping wake in the shallow Orakei Basin.

There were a total of just over 20 competitors, all whom rode a heat to establishing seeding for the finals to follow. We saw some great riding on show during the heats with all of the favourites coming through with no major upset results. However by the time it came around to riding finals later on that day, the wind had picked up and the conditions were far more challenging. This made way for some of the underdogs to turn on the pressure for those riders following them. Jamie Barrow took advantage of this and rode out two passes that set the standard of the finals with only a few riders to follow. Unfortunately hot favourite back from injury; Brad Smeele failed to adjust to the condition and repeated two tricks and then fell on a toeside 540, leaving only Nik Gibson last off the dock to knock Jamie out of first place.  Nik started off strong with a tootsie roll first trick and didn’t back off for the rest of his first pass. He seemed to back it off a bit on his second pass as he rode out two stand up passes. Unbeknown to the rest of us he had actually snapped his board in his first pass so was struggling coming back on his second pass with a broken board but luckily had done enough already to take out the win.

A big thankyou goes out to Wake New Zealand for putting on such a great event and to all the sponsors and volunteers that made this event possible. Be sure to get along next year and check it out for yourself as this event is set to be a real feature event on the WNZ calendar.

Winchfest Digital Cover

After on of the craziest comps ever to go down in New Zealand, it feels like getting from home after the Tirua Pipe Masters of old and with one of the so called old guys of NZ wake ruling the roost, Josh O came out ahead of Brad Smeele after an hour long judges deliberation but it Brad who nailed the new digi cover on the rooftop with one hell of a lipslide. Check back in a couple days for us to deal with the rest of the pics and get a story put together.

Flick

There’s not too many girls in the NZ wake scene that I can say have spent more time in boats than I have but Flick is one of them, and even better than that we have spent a fair amount of time in boats together, from back in the day when building a dam in the river was more important than learning tricks, to last week when we rode cable together for the first time.

She’s been at me for a while to run more girls on the site, as this is the first post of any girl skating I’m happy to say Flick has a shot up and I’m doubting it will be her last.

How to make a tindy cool

There’s a bunch of those things that you generally try avoid while riding a wakeboard, well I do anyway, and grabbing somewhere between indy and tail is right up there on my list, this I guess isn’t you average tindy tho, it’s not quite a glide and it came back to landing regular but I like having disagreements with Josh O about what’s cool and what’s not, this tindy is on my cool side of the line.
